What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
The name implies that transponders send out an encoded signal with the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal is called an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to relay specific messages to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to alert controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are essential to ensure safe flying.

PIN codes are also often required by some OEMs for key programmers from aftermarket as a security measure to ensure that they are not used by people who are not authorized to steal data from modules.
VIN Numbers
VIN numbers are used to identify cars and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to each vehicle on earth, except alien cars (or whatever).
